ADA Approval

Earlier this month, the American Dietetic Association published an updated paper on vegetarian diets, citing that both well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets are not only healthy, but also an excellent preventative measure for many life-threatening diseases. Healthy vegetarian and vegan diets have been approved by the ADA for all stages of life, including early childhood, pregnancy, and adolescence. They recognize that vegetarians and vegans often have lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and high amounts of important nutrients. The association even put in the effort to research the specifics on why all of this is true.

So, if someone ever tells you that your diet is unhealthy, be sure to send them this report.

P.S. Does anyone else think that PETA’s ad at Michael Jackson’s memorial went over people’s heads? Especially since I don’t think MJ was a vegetarian. Plus, was the bikini really necessary?

Another Life Saved!

Now, I’m not the biggest fan of PETA, but I do visit their sites from time to time, because they do have legitimate information. Today, on the peta2 blog (blog.peta2.com) I read a story about a college student who, during her commute to class, saved a chicken that fell off of a slaughterhouse-bound truck! It’s stories like this that make me hopeful.

:) Read about it here: http://blog.peta2.com/2009/02/saved_a_chicken_on_the_way_to.html

Edit: For another great rescue story, read about Oogy the dog. He lost much of the left side of his face, having been used as a sort of canine punching bag (or biting bag, I suppose) to teach other dogs how to fight. Post rescue, he’s a friendly, loving dog to his new family. Another happy ending. :)
